Dr Hijab meets Mr. Massoud BarzaniDate Posted: 04 April 2016
Dr. Riad Hijab, former Syrian Prime Minister and General Coordinator of the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) held a meeting with the President of Iraqi Kurdistan, Mr. Massoud Barzani at his residence in the city of Erbil, on Monday 4th of April 2016.
The meeting covered recent developments in Syria, the regional impact of the current situation, as well as means of cooperation and coordination on issues of bilateral interest.
Dr. Hijab stressed the need to enhance communication and coordination on joint security issues to prevent further spill-over of the crisis into neighbouring countries. He also stressed the need for and the importance of complementary efforts in the fight against terrorism.
Another significant issue discussed, was the need to achieve societal cohesion by absorbing all components of the Syrian society through the political transition process, and to work on the integration of all components of the Syrian Kurdish political spectrum in the political transition process; discouraging those with ulterior foreign agendas from monopolising political representation for narrow partisan objectives.
Commenting on the political process, Dr. Hijab indicated that: "Syrians alone decide the future of their country in accordance with national consensus, free and fair elections with equal opportunities for all. We will not allow for any one group to redefine national identity to suit their narrow-minded preconceptions through the use of force."
