Dr. Riad Hijab contacts world & regional leaders

Date Posted: 27 April 2016

In the unfolding events of the past few days, Dr. Riad Hijab has contacted and spoke to the Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, the Turkish Foreign Minister Mouloud Jawish Ihsanoglu, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Borge Brende, alerting them to the alarmingly escalating humanitarian situation in several Syrian provinces, particularly Aleppo. The regime and its allies have committed a number of horrific massacres in a premeditated escalation of hostilities, enlisting many more sectarian militias and herds of mercenaries to support them in a planned campaign over the city of Aleppo.
Dr. Hijab reasserted that these grave violations of the truce confirm the regime and its allies' desire to derail the political process, and evade its just outcomes. He called on the international community to work to stop the suffering of the Syrian people, to end the seige on cities and regions effected, to enable humanitarian agencies to deliver aid to all those in need, release all detainees, stop aerial and artillery bombardments and attacks against civilians and civilian targets, to stop forced displacement, and a moratorium on executions, in accordance with articles 12, 13 and 14 of the UNSCR 2254.
Dr. Hijab warned that any military escalation by the regime would have far reaching ground and humanitarian consequences of grave seriousness, with hundreds of thousands more Syrians taking refuge in neighbouring countries or heading towards the sea in search of safe havens at any cost after neighbouring countries capacity to absorb them is diminished.
In light of this Dr Hijab called on holding an urgent meeting in Paris of the Friends of Syria Group in order to contain this crisis and stop further aggression on the Syrian people, and to demand from the regime and its allies to abide by commitments to UN resolutions and to end their violations against the Syrian people.
