Dr. Hijab in a meeting with German Foreign Minister: "We need a new strategy for negotiations"Date Posted: 22 May 2017
The General Coordinator of the Higher Negotiation Committee (HNC), Dr. Riad Hijab, and his accompanying delegation met with German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel on Monday 22 May 2017 at the Ministry's headquarters in Berlin, where they discussed the developments in the Syrian arena.
Speaking about international mediation, Dr. Hijab stressed the HNC's commitment to peaceful negotiations and its support for international mediation to reach a political transition, hinting at the need to submit new proposals that correspond with the complex changes in the region.
Speaking about the outcomes of Astana; Hijab pointed to the existence of many positive aspects, but the dilemma remains on the stubbornness of Bashar Al-Assad's regime and its continued violation of the truce, and the failure of international efforts to reach any peaceful solution.
Dr. Hijab stressed that the process of political transition and the associated arrangements must be made in accordance with the UN mediation in Geneva. He added: "We are committed to the political process, we are realistic and open, and therefore our efforts focus on supporting the negotiation axes."
At the end of the meeting, Dr. Hijab and his delegation expressed their gratitude for the policies of Germany in support of the just demands of the Syrian people, and the positions of its government in the face of Assad's regime, and the reception of thousands of Syrian refugees despite internal and external pressures.
