Dr. Riad Hijab Meets With Turkey's Pm Dr. Ahmet DavutogluDate Posted: 31 January 2016
Dr. Riad Hijab met with H.E. Turkey's Prime Minister Dr. Ahmet Davutoğlu on Sunday 31st January 2016 in Riyadh, to discuss the latest developments in the Syrian political process. Dr Hijab discussed with him his concern with the unrelenting siege on various Syrian cities and intensified air strikes and bombardment of cities and refugee camps.
He conveyed to Dr. Davutoğlu that thus far the cooperation demonstrated by the Committee comes as part and parcel of guarantees and written pledges received from a number of international parties for the implementation of Articles 12 and 13 of UNSCR 2254 with regard to improving the humanitarian situation in Syria through lifting the siege, releasing detainees, and the immediate cessation of indiscriminate shelling of civilians. Pledges have been conveyed to the Committee highlighting that the humanitarian issue is a fundamental, natural right of the Syrian people, which is non-negotiable and not to be determined by the Syrian regime’s (or its allies) political manoeuvring or wishes.
Dr. Hijab restated that it would be pointless for the HNC delegation to remain in Geneva if the Syrian regime feels it can persist in its crimes against civilians, and will withdraw its delegation in the midst of continued failure by the UN and international powers to prevent such violations.
Dr. Hijab expressed his deep gratitude to Dr. Ahmet Davutoğlu for all the support that Turkey has shown towards the plight of the Syrian people, and for their immense contribution and diplomatic efforts for a just political solution through the much anticipated formation of a transitional governing body with full executive powers.
